A former Republic, located in south Russia, between the Black and the Caspian
Seas. Following the fall down of the Russian Empire, Transcaucasus declared its
independence in 1918 as a Republic, however in the same year it split into
three separate Republics of ARMENIA, AZERBAIJAN and GEORGIA which were occupied
by German, Turkish and British armies. After being liberated in 1922 by the Red
Army, the three Republics were reunited as the Transcaucasian Soviet Federation.
Merged with RUSSIA and UKRAINE later in same year to form the Union of Soviet
Socialist Republics (see RUSSIA, Soviet Union). In 1935 ceased to exist as
an entity when the three above republics were again proclaimed individual states
within the Soviet Union. Stamps were issued in 1923.
