Area - 86,600 sq.km; Population - 7,770,000; Capital - Baku
A Republic in southwestern Asia, one of the Caucasian states.
Azerbaijan's most prominent products are oil, cotton, and natural gas.
Became an Independent Republic in 1918 and in 1922 conjoined with ARMENIA and
GEORGIA to form the Transcaucasian Soviet Federation as a member state of the
Soviet Union. In 1936, the Federation came apart and the three Republics were
again proclaimed individual States within the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics
(see RUSSIA, Soviet Union). Stamps issuing between 1919-1923 when replaced by those of
TRANSCAUCASIAN FEDERATION. Azerbaijan attained independence from the Soviet Union
in 1991, since then reissued stamps. Annual output about 60.
The territory of NAGORNO KARABAKH is inside Azerbaijan but population is mainly ethnic Armenian.
Separate stamps were issued for the enclave of NAKHCHIVAN Autonomous Republic in 1993.
In 1922 overprints in Cyrillic script on stamps of Azerbaijan appeared for the capital
city of Baku (the Cyrillic script meaning Baku).
