A Republic, located off southwestern Russia, on the Black Sea.
Ukraine's most prominent products are coal, electric power, metals, machinery and
transport equipment. Following the fall down of the Russian Empire, the Ukraine
People's Republic was established in 1918. Fighting went on by the Wrangel and Denikin
Armies against the Red Army, until 1922 when Ukraine became part of the Soviet Union
(see RUSSIA, Soviet Union) together with RUSSIA, BELARUS (WHITE RUSSIA) and
TRANSCAUCASIAN FEDERATION. Stamp issuing between 1918-1922 as independent,
and in 1923 by the Soviet Union. Most of the stamps have a trident shaped symbol,
which was adopted by the Ukraine from the Coat of Arms of Grand Duke Vladimir.
Between 1941-1943, during World War II, Ukraine was occupied by German forces
and German stamps with overprint 'Ukraine' were in use.
Ukraine gained its freedom in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union, since then
reissued stamps. Annual output about 50.
