Information
Several European powers with an interest in the Eastern Mediterranean area,
kept Post Offices within the territory of the Turkish Empire, using their own
stamps surcharged with local currency. These Post Offices were closed around
1923, with the signing of the Lousanne Treaty. Stamps as style of RUSSIA, most of
them surcharged by local currency, were in use between 1863-1921. First of those
were issued for the Russian Company of Navigation and Trade and had their
initials in Cyrillic script.
Separate stamps for Post Offices in various cities and territories within the
Empire appeared between 1909-1910, with the name of the Post Office overprinted
as following: Constantinople, Jaffa, Jerusalem, Kerassunde, Mount Athos,
Salonica, Smyrna, Trebizonde, Beirut, Dardanelles, MYTILENE and Rizeh.
In 1921 special stamps, known as 'Wrangel Issues' were printed for army forces
of General Wrangel and refugees from SOUTH RUSSIA, stationed in TURKEY, Serbia,
Bulgaria and Greece.
