A Republic, located in central Asia, bordering the Caspian Sea.
Turkmenistan's most prominent products are natural gas, oil, petroleum products, textiles
and food processing. Annexed by RUSSIA between 1865 and 1885, Turkmenistan (former
part of TURKESTAN (RUSSIAN)) became a Soviet republic in 1925. It achieved its
independence upon the dissolution of the USSR (see RUSSIA, Soviet Union) in 1991.
