Information
The capital of former GERMANY, formerly within the territory of East Germany.
After World War II, when Germany was divided to four Zones (see GERMANY, Zones)
and later on to West and East, the city was divided by the Berlin Wall, its western
area became part of West Germany while its eastern area became the capital of
GERMANY, DEMOCRATIC. In 1990, when the communist regime of East Germany collapsed
together with the Wall, Germany was reunited with Berlin as its new Capital (see
GERMANY (DEUTSCHLAND)). Stamps issued for the Western part of Berlin between 1948 and
1990 by West German Postal Authorities.
