Information
Following the defeat of GERMANY and its surrender in 1945, the Allied Powers
established the Four Occupation Zones - American, British, French and Soviet.
The American and British Zones were combined in 1946 into one, joined by the
French Zone in 1948. Out of these three the Federal Republic of Germany came
into existence on September 21st, 1949 (see GERMANY (DEUTSCHLAND)). The German
Democratic Republic was established on October 7th, 1949 on the former territory
of the Russian Zone (see GERMANY, DEMOCRATIC). Stamps were issued for the various
zones mainly with the inscription 'DEUTSCHE POST', however stamps were also
issued for the individual states in the French Zone (Southern Baden, Rheinland-
Palatinate, Southern Wurttemberg and SAAR) and in the Soviet Zone (Mecklenburg,
Thuringen, Eastern Saxony, Province of Saxony, West Saxony). Berlin itself was
also divided between the Four Powers, West Berlin having its own issues (see
GERMANY, West Berlin) while East Berlin became the capital of the German
Democratic Republic. Stamps for the various zones were issued between 1945-1949.
