Area - 75,863 sq.km; Capital - Munich
Formerly a Kingdom, located in south Germany, one of the former German states.
In 1918 a Republic was proclaimed and in 1920 united into GERMANY as one of its
Federal States. Stamps of Bavaria were the first to be issued in Germany in
1849, replaced in 1920 by those of Germany. Some of the first stamps appeared
with a red silk thread as a matter of precaution against forgeries. A unique
feature was used for postage due stamps which had the inscription 'Vom Empfanger
Zahlbar' - payable by recipient.
