Area - 171,665 sq.km; Capital - Saigon
A former Independent State, southern part of Vietnam (south of 17th parallel).
Formerly part of INDO-CHINA, separated in 1954 from the VIETNAM, North by an
agreement signed at Geneva. In 1955 it was given the official name of Republic
of Vietnam. From 1960 the N.L.F. - National Liberation Front, also known as the
Vietcong and supported by the Communist government which ruled North Vietnam,
gradually took over the southern territory until final surrender of the south in
1975. On July 2nd, 1976 the state was reunited as Vietnamese Socialist Republic
(see VIETNAM). Stamp issuing between 1955-1975. Stamps of the N.L.F. issued
between 1963-1976.
