A French Overseas Department, two islands (Guadeloupe and Grande-Terre) in the
West Indies, administrating five small dependency islands. Economy based mainly
on agriculture and tourism.
A French colony until 1946, when it became an overseas territory. In 1958 the
inhabitants voted in favor of remaining within the new French Community and
were given the status of overseas department of FRANCE, a title which they still
hold.
First stamps issued in 1884, replaced by those of France in 1947.
