A Republic, group of islands between Madagascar and the east coast of Africa, in
the Indian ocean. Economy based on agriculture, essence of perfume, copra and
vanilla are exported.
A former French Protectorate, incorporated into MADAGASCAR (MALAGASY) in 1908 (including
its islands GRAND COMORE, MAYOTTE, MOHELI and ANJOUAN) as 'Province de Mayotte
et depenendances' and stamps of Madagascar came into use. In 1912 became a
colony. The Comoros achieved internal autonomy in 1946 and broke away from
Madagascar in 1950. On December 31st, 1975 gained full independence as the
Republic of the Comoro Islands, however the island of Mayotte chose to remain
French and was given the status of an overseas territory of FRANCE.
First stamps issued in 1950. Direct UPU membership from July 29th, 1976. Annual
output about 35.
