Area - 587,041 sq.km; Population - 15,982,000; Capital - Antananarivo
A Republic, island east of Africa, in the Indian ocean, the largest one in
Africa. Economy based on agriculture and cattle raising, exporting coffee,
vanilla and rice.
Formerly a French Protectorate, a Colony from 1896. In 1906 the former colonies
of DIEGO-SUAREZ, NOSSI-BE and STE.MARIE DE MADAGASCAR were incorporated into it
and in 1908 also the former protectorates of the COMORO ISLANDS including
GRAND COMORE, ANJOUAN, MAYOTTE and MOHELI. The Comoros broke away in 1950. In
1958 Madagascar became autonomous within the Community of FRANCE as the Malagasy
Republic, and on June 26th, 1960 an independent state. Renamed as the Democratic
Republic of Madagascar in 1975.
First stamps issued in 1889. A British Post office operated on the island in
1895. Direct UPU membership since November 2nd, 1961. Annual output about 50.
