Area - 475,442 sq.km; Population - 15,803,000; Capital - Yaounde
A Republic, located in west Africa, on the gulf of Guinea. Economy based mainly
on agriculture, exporting cocoa, coffee, cotton, rubber, timber and aluminum.
Formerly a Protectorate of GERMANY until 1914 when it was occupied by Anglo-French
forces. After World War I it became a League of Nations mandate and was
administratively divided between GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) and FRANCE. The French territory
became independent as Cameroon Republic on January 1st, 1960. The northern
region of British Cameroon (also known as SOUTHERN CAMEROONS) became part of
independent NIGERIA in 1960, while the southern region joined the Cameroon
Republic to form the Federal Republic of Cameroon. On May 20th, 1972 the name
was changed to United Republic of Cameroon.
First stamps issued in 1897, as a German Protectorate several indirect UPU
memberships, direct from July 26th, 1960. Annual output about 10.
