A Republic, located in west Africa, on the Atlantic coast. Its economy is based
on agriculture, exporting bananas, coffee and minerals.
A former Colony of FRANCE, from 1891 known as French Guinea. Incorporated within
FRENCH WEST AFRICA from 1904, and became a French overseas territory in 1946.
It became the Independent Republic of Guinea on October 2nd, 1958 declining to
enter the French Community.
First stamps issued in 1892. Stamps of French West Africa were in use from 1945
until 1958. Direct UPU membership since May 6th, 1959. Annual output about 70.
