A Republic, located in west Africa, in vicinity of the Sahara desert. The
economy is based on agriculture and livestock raising.
Under French protection since 1893 and incorporated in FRENCH WEST AFRICA from
1899. It separated from UPPER SENEGAL AND NIGER in 1920 and became a
colony of FRANCE in 1922. Autonomous Republic within the French Community since 1958,
from which it withdrew and became an independent Republic on August 3rd, 1960.
First stamps issued in 1921. Stamps of French West Africa were in use from 1944
until 1959. Indirect UPU membership from July 1st, 1876, direct since June 12th,
1961. Annual output about 150.
