A Republic, located in west Africa, between Guinea Bissau and Mauritania. An
agricultural country, fishing and minerals are main industries.
Formerly a colony of FRANCE, the oldest territory under French protection in
Africa. In 1946 it gained the status of overseas territory. In 1959 included in
the Federation of MALI together with FRENCH SUDAN, and broke away in 1960 to
become today's Republic of Senegal.
First stamps issued in 1887. Between 1945 to 1959 stamps of FRENCH WEST AFRICA
were in use. Indirect UPU membership since July 1st, 1876 (as colony of France),
direct since June 14th, 1961. Annual output about 100.
