Area - 1,530,602 sq.km; Capital - Bamako
A former Colony of FRANCE located in central west Africa. It conjoined into
FRENCH WEST AFRICA in 1899 and was divided between neighboring colonies of
DAHOMEY, FRENCH GUINEA, IVORY COAST, NIGER, SENEGAMBIA AND NIGER. Between
1906 and 1921 part of it was known as UPPER SENEGAL AND NIGER. In 1959 joined with
SENEGAL to form the MALI Federation. Stamp issuing between 1894-1942. From 1902
to 1904 stamps of Senegambia And Niger were valid, from 1904 to 1921 stamps of
Upper Senegal And Niger. In 1921 issues for French Sudan reappeared, and from
1944 to 1959 stamps of French West Africa were in use.
