Information |
Area - 4,718,379 sq.km; Capital - Dakar
A former territory in northwest Africa comprising the following former colonies of FRANCE:
DAHOMEY, FRENCH GUINEA, FRENCH SUDAN, IVORY COAST, MAURITANIA, NIGER,
SENEGAL and UPPER VOLTA. Beginning in 1895 these colonies joined into French West
Africa, which was established that year, using at first stamps with their own
name and then also stamps with the addition of 'Afrique Occidentale Francaise'.
From 1944 until 1958 only stamps of French West Africa were in use for the above
colonies. In 1959 French West Africa ceased to exist as one unit, however the
stamps were valid until 1962. In 1958 French Guinea was the first of these to
gain independence, followed by the gradual independence of the others, except
for Senegal and French Sudan who conjoined to form the MALI Federation in 1960.
Stamp issuing between 1944-1959.
