Information
'French Levant' is a term for various French post offices within the former
Turkish Empire, using stamps of FRANCE surcharged with local currency until
replaced by Levant stamps. These post offices existed for civilian purposes
between 1885-1923 when the last foreign post office on territory of TURKEY was
closed under the Lausanne Treaty. However, the term 'LEVANT' is still in use when
referring to territories under former Turkish Empire rule.
