A Republic, located in north Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea, between
Algeria and Libya. Agricultural country, wine, olive oil and phosphates are
exported.
Tunisia was occupied by the French in 1880 and in 1881 declared a protectorate
of FRANCE. Following internal revolts and guerilla fights, Tunisia was granted by
France internal autonomy in 1955. In 1956 it became an independent monarchy and
since July 25th, 1957 a republic.
First stamps issued in 1888. Several indirect UPU memberships from 1878, direct
as an independent state from November 1st, 1956. Annual output about 20.
