Information
A city in the northwestern corner of Morocco, facing Gibraltar. When Morocco was
divided to French and Spanish territories (see MOROCCO and SPANISH MOROCCO) in
1912, Tangier and its surroundings were declared an international zone
(373 sq.km). It did not have own post offices, and GERMANY (until 1914), FRANCE,
SPAIN (ESPANA) and GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) opened post offices in the city. First stamps of the
French P.O. were issued in 1918, prior to that French stamps were in use. In
1940 Spain occupied and annexed Tangier to its territory, however withdrew in
October 1945 and the city regained its pre-war status. The French P.O. in
Tangier was closed in 1942.
