Area - 5,598 sq.km; Capital - Metz
Formerly a disputed territory in eastern France, occupied by the German army
during World War II. In 1870 was known together with ALSACE as
ALSACE AND LORRAINE, when first occupied by Germany and annexed to the German
Empire in 1871. Returned to France after World War I, in 1919. Stamp issuing
between 1940-1941, overprints on German stamps, since 1941 only stamps of
GERMANY were in use. In 1945 returned to FRANCE and since then French territory.
