A Crown Colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), comprising a group of islands in the
West Indies at the south-eastern end of the Bahamas. Salt is the main industry,
exporting also conch shells.
A British colony since 1848, dependency of JAMAICA from 1873 until 1962 when it
became a separate crown colony.
First stamps issued in 1900. For earlier issues see TURKS ISLANDS. From 1981 to
1985 the CAICOS ISLANDS had also separate issues although they were (and still
are) one colony. Annual output about 50.
