An Independent State, comprising two islands located on the eastern edge of the
Leeward Islands, in the West Indies. The mountainous islands produce sugar, rum
and cotton, tourism becoming a valuable income.
Formerly the British Colony ANTIGUA, who gained its independence on November
1st, 1981 taking on the name of Antigua and Barbuda. The two former dependencies
of Antigua - BARBUDA and REDONDA continue to issue own stamps even though
Barbuda is a part of the state. A member of the British Commonwealth, with the
Monarch of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) as a ceremonial head of state.
First stamps issued in 1981. UPU membership since July 1st, 1879. Annual output
about 170. |
