An Emirate in the Persian Gulf, consisting of a group of islands off the eastern
coast of Saudi Arabia. Oil and aluminum are the most important industries.
From 1861 an independent Sheikhdom and British protectorate, using Indian stamps
overprinted 'BAHRAIN' since 1933, from 1948 Great Britain stamps with the same
overprint. Independent Emirate since August 14th 1971. Indirect UPU membership
from 1884 under British India, indirect from April 1st 1948 through British Post
Office (see BRITISH AGENCIES), direct from December 21st 1973. Annual output about 15. |
