Formerly BRITISH HONDURAS, a colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) since 1862. The name Belize
was adopted in June 1973. Achieved independence on September 21st, 1981,
as a member of the British Commonwealth. A chain of several hundred islands
had self stamp issuing between 1984-1985, see BELIZE, CAYES OF.
First stamps issued in 1973. Indirect UPU membership since January 1st, 1879,
direct since October 1st, 1982. Annual output about 15.
