A former British Colony, island in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of Canada.
A self governing British colony since 1855, and declared a dominion in 1917.
After World War I it was administrated by a British commission due to great
debts. Gradually the economy improved and in 1949 Newfoundland became the 10th
and last province to join into the Dominion of CANADA. Stamp issuing between
1857-1949, some of first issues are very rare in the philatelic market. Stamps
of Canada came into use in 1949.
