An Independent State, group of nine islands in the Pacific ocean, northeast of
Australia. Economy mainly based on phosphate mining and production of copra.
Formerly Ellice Islands, part of GILBERT AND ELLICE ISLANDS from which it was
separated in 1976, still as a crown colony of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.). Full independency
since October 1st, 1978 within the British Commonwealth.
First stamps issued in 1976. Indirect UPU membership since October 1st 1911 as
a British Colony, direct since February 3rd, 1981.
Separate stamps were issued between 1984-1987 for eight islands, see FUNAFUTI,
NANUMAGA, NANUMEA, NIUTAO, NUI, NUKUFETAU, NUKULAELAE, VAITUPU,
many stamps come in pairs showing Locomotives and Automobiles.
