A former British Colony, group of islands in the Pacific ocean, northeast of
Australia, consisting of the Gilbert Islands, the Ellice Islands, Phoenix
Islands, Line Islands and Ocean Island. Annexed by GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) in 1892 and
formed into Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony in 1915 by request of the native
administrations. In January 1976 divided into GILBERT ISLANDS and TUVALU. Stamp
issuing between 1911-1975.
