An Independent Kingdom, group of about 150 islands in the south Pacific Ocean,
south of Samoa. Also known as The Friendly Islands. Economy is based mainly on
agriculture.
A former native kingdom, self governing protectorate of GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) since 1900.
An independent monarchy since June 4th, 1970 and member of the British
Commonwealth. One of its islands, NIUAFO'OU, is self stamp issuing since 1983.
First stamps issued in 1886. One of few states to issue stamps in curious
shapes, e.g. map of the island, heart shaped, fruit shaped, etc. Indirect UPU
membership from July 1st 1930 as a British protectorate, direct since January
26th, 1972. Annual output about 30.
