Area - 18,274 sq.km; Population 844,000; Capital - Suva
A Republic, group of about 800 islands of which circa 100 inhabited, located in
the southwestern Pacific, north of New Zealand. Economy is based on agriculture
and mining.
A former native kingdom which was ceded to GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) in 1874 by King Cakobau
and became a British colony. Self administrated since 1965 and independent from
October 10th, 1970. Withdrew from the British Commonwealth in 1987.
First stamps issued in 1870 by the local Fiji Times newspaper and are of high
philatelic value. Indirect UPU membership from October 1st 1891 as a British
colony, direct since June 18th, 1971. Annual output about 30.
