A Dependency of NEW ZEALAND, three coral islands located in the south Pacific
ocean northeast of New Zealand. Economy is mainly based on production and export
of copra.
Formerly known as Union Islands and part of the GILBERT AND ELLICE ISLANDS
colony until 1925 when they came under New Zealand jurisdiction, administrated
by western SAMOA (WESTERN SAMOA). The name Tokelau was given in 1946. Since 1948
incorporated into New Zealand. First stamp issued in 1948, prior to that stamps of Samoa and
Western Samoa were in use. Annual output about 15.
