A Republic, island on the equator in the west central Pacific Ocean. Economy
based on the large deposits of phosphates for which the island is famous.
A former German colony, part of MARSHALL ISLANDS, occupied by Australian army in
1914 and mandated to Great Britain after World War I, then administrated by
NEW ZEALAND, AUSTRALIA and GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.) jointly. In 1947 was trusted to
Australia by the United Nations. Became an independent Republic on January 31st,
1968 within the British Commonwealth.
First stamps issued in 1916. Several indirect UPU memberships, direct since
April 17th, 1969. Annual output about 15.
