An independent state, the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, north of
Australia. Its economy is based on agriculture, exporting cocoa, tea, coffee,
rubber and gold.
Formed in 1949 by conjoining the two former territories of NEW GUINEA and PAPUA,
administrated by AUSTRALIA until 1973 when it became self governing. Since
September 15th, 1975 an independent nation, member of the British Commonwealth
(see GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.)). First stamps issued in 1952, several indirect UPU memberships,
direct since June 4th, 1976. Annual output about 25. |
