Former British Colony, the southeastern part of New Guinea island. Known as
British New Guinea until 1906, when its name was changed to Papua and came under
administration of AUSTRALIA. Although German New Guinea was also administrated by
Australia during World War I, the two territories used separate stamp issues.
In 1942 Papua was occupied by Japan, and in 1949 it conjoined with NEW GUINEA to
form PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Stamp issuing from 1901 (as British New Guinea) until
1941. The firsts issues, the 'Lakatoi' (trading canoe), are very well known and coveted by philatelists.
