A former German Colony, located in the northeastern part of the island of New
Guinea, north of Australia. In 1914, during World War I, it became an Australian
administration territory, and after the war it was mandated to AUSTRALIA by the
League of Nations. In 1942, during World War II, New Guinea was occupied by
Japan. Since 1949 conjoined with PAPUA, to form PAPUA NEW GUINEA. Stamp
issuing from 1897 (for German New Guinea) until 1939.
