An Australian dependency, a group of 27 coral islands in the Indian ocean,
northwest of Australia. Only two of them are inhabited, main occupations are
mining and production of coconut products which are also exported.
Formerly under various foreign administrations: GREAT BRITAIN (U.K.), CEYLON, STRAITS SETTLEMENTS and colony of SINGAPORE. Since 1955 belonging to AUSTRALIA. In 1984
the Cocos islands inhabitants voted in favor of full merger with Australia,
having full citizens rights. First own stamps issued in 1963 (by Australia).
Prior to that stamps of the various administrations were in use. Annual output
about 10.
