A former British Crown Colony, island off the southeastern coast of Australia.
Originally known as VAN DIEMEN'S LAND, named after its discoverer. In 1855 the
name was changed to Tasmania. In 1901 joined with the other five British
colonies on Australian territory to form the Commonwealth of AUSTRALIA. Stamp
issuing between 1853-1912 (first as Van Diemen's Land), replaced by stamps of Australia in 1913.
