Area - 124,967 sq.km; Capital - Kuching
Located in the northwestern part of the Borneo island. In 1841, James Brooke, a
British officer, purchased a territory on which he established the state of
Sarawak (a small part of today's area) and declared himself the Rajah. In 1888
it became a British Protectorate, occupied by the Japanese between 1941-45. In
1946 it became a British colony and since 1963 within Malaysia. Stamp issuing
started in 1869. Now very low production, about 7 in a decade issued by the
Federation of MALAYSIA.
