A former British Crown Colony from 1857 until 1948, when it became independent as a
dominion. On May 22nd, 1972 it became the Republic of SRI LANKA, within the
British Commonwealth. Various issues appeared in bilingual form, i.e. same
stamps with the name of the state inscribed once in Latin and once in local
inscription. Stamp issuing between 1857-1972. The firsts issues, the 'Chalon Heads', are very well known and coveted by philatelists.
